New Wind Capacity Addition
- 6 GW new wind capacity expected by end of FY 2025-26; highest-ever annual addition.
- Previous year’s addition was 4 GW; over 3 GW added in current financial year so far.
Renewable Energy Targets
- India moving towards 500 GW renewable energy by 2030; wind power contributing 100 GW or more.
- Currently 54 GW installed wind energy, 30 GW under implementation; well on track for 2030 target.
- Total installed capacity nearing 500 GW; non-fossil sources contributing over 257 GW currently.
Regional Contribution
- Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh together contribute almost half of India’s 54 GW wind capacity.
Atmanirbhar Wind Mission
- 70% local content currently in India’s wind industry showing strong domestic capability and manufacturing.
- Goal: increase local content to 85% by 2030 under Atmanirbhar Wind Mission promoting self-reliance.
- GST reduced from 12% to 5% on wind equipment; turbine cost reduced by ₹25 lakh per MW.
Global Manufacturing Hub
- With an approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM)-wind framework, India can meet 10% global wind demand by 2030, 20% by 2040.
- Emerge as global manufacturing hub for turbines and components enhancing export potential significantly.
Offshore Wind Potential
- National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) study: potential of 1,164 GW at 150 metres hub height across India for wind projects.
- Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme launched for offshore wind projects targeting 1 GW first phase.
- 500 MW each off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; Tamil Nadu tender expected by February announcement.
