Today’s high-yield Prelims facts — reforming the National Testing Agency, Kerala’s Operation Toofan anti-drug drive, and forest encroachment in the Agasthyamalai landscape
📝
National Testing Agency (NTA)
News Context
- The Supreme Court called for long-term reforms in the NTA instead of repeatedly forming committees after every crisis.
- The remarks followed NEET-UG 2026 paper-leak concerns and the creation of a new Nandan Nilekani-led task force to make public examinations more secure.
About NTA — Key Facts
- Established in 2017 (began functioning 2018) as an autonomous, premier testing organisation.
- Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860; functions under the Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education).
- Set up to relieve bodies like CBSE and AICTE from conducting entrance examinations.
- Conducts NEET-UG, JEE (Main), UGC-NET, CUET (UG & PG), CMAT, GPAT and other entrance tests.
Reform Committees — Concepts for Prelims
- K. Radhakrishnan Committee (2024): Headed by the former ISRO Chairman, to recommend reforms in exam processes, data security and NTA structure after the NEET-UG 2024 controversy.
- Nandan Nilekani Task Force: Newly constituted for technological reforms to make exams leak-proof.
Exam trap: After recent reforms, the government decided NTA will focus only on higher education entrance exams, not recruitment exams, from 2025 onwards.

About the Agasthyamalai Landscape
- A biodiversity-rich region in the southern Western Ghats (UNESCO World Heritage Site), spanning Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- Home to the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme), named after peak Agastya Malai.
- Protected areas: Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (TN’s first Tiger Reserve), Srivilliputhur–Megamalai Tiger Reserve, and Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary (mainland India’s southernmost sanctuary).
About the Central Empowered Committee (CEC)
- Constituted by the Supreme Court (originally in 2002) to monitor compliance with its forest and wildlife conservation orders.
- Made a permanent statutory body by the MoEFCC in 2023.
- Advises the SC on issues under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Key CEC Findings

- Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve: ~10.16 hectares encroached by 998 families.
- SC directed disciplinary action against 118 government-servant encroachers and a moratorium on welfare-scheme extension into encroached forest areas.
