Reclaiming Assam’s Elephant Habitat: Biochar & Invasive Alien Plant Species
News Context
- A project in Assam’s Udalguri district is converting invasive plants into biochar to improve elephant habitats β led by Aaranyak with support from the International Elephant Foundation, in Khalingduar Reserve Forest near Bhutan.
Invasive Alien Species β Key Facts
- Considered the second biggest threat to biodiversity after habitat destruction; IPBES’s 2023 report flagged them as a major driver of species extinction worldwide.
- Harm ecosystems by outcompeting native plants, shrinking herbivore forage, and increasing human-wildlife conflict as animals move into farmland.
The Three IAPs Targeted β Concepts for Prelims
| Species | Key Feature |
|---|---|
| Lantana camara | Allelopathy β releases chemicals blocking other plants’ growth; toxic to livestock |
| Chromolaena odorata (Siam Weed) | Fast-spreading, highly flammable shrub β raises forest-fire risk |
| Mikania micrantha | “Mile-a-minute” climbing vine β smothers trees/crops; threat to Kaziranga |
How the Project Tackles IAPs β Three-Pronged Approach
- Targeted IAP management (manual uprooting), seed-ball-assisted native regeneration, and biomass-to-biochar conversion.
- Biochar is made via pyrolysis (heating biomass with little/no oxygen) β improves soil fertility and water retention, and stores carbon long-term for climate mitigation.
Elephant conservation facts: Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) is IUCN Endangered, Schedule I under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, National Heritage Animal (2010); Project Elephant launched 1992.

Centre Expands Curbs on Cold Medicines for Children Under 4
News Context
- The Union Health Ministry restricted all Fixed-Dose Combinations (FDCs) containing chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride β must now carry a warning against use in children below 4 years.
Key Facts
- An FDC combines two or more active drugs in one dosage form; irrational FDCs can carry unproven benefit and added risk.
- Chlorpheniramine maleate (antihistamine) and phenylephrine hydrochloride (decongestant) can cause drowsiness/excitability and affect heart rate/BP in young children respectively.
- Issued under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, “in the interest of public health” β warning must appear on label, insert and promotional literature.

UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations)
News Context
- UKMTO is in focus after the Liberia-flagged vessel Minoan Dignity was hit by a projectile leaving the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member.
About UKMTO β Key Facts
- A British Royal Navy-sponsored body, established 2001 in Dubai (to tackle Somali piracy), shifted to Portsmouth in 2014.
- Coverage: Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf and parts of the Indian Ocean; role has grown amid Houthi Red Sea attacks and Strait of Hormuz tensions.
Key Geographical Chokepoints
Strait of Hormuz
Connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman; lies between Iran and Oman/UAE β a top global oil chokepoint.
Bab el-Mandeb Strait
Connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden; lies between Yemen and Djibouti/Eritrea β key Suez Canal route, targeted by Houthis.
Exam trap: The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman β it does NOT connect the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden (that’s the Bab el-Mandeb Strait). India runs anti-piracy patrols here via Operation Sankalp.

Hexavalent Chromium Groundwater Contamination in Uttar Pradesh
News Context
- Decades of poor industrial waste management contaminated groundwater with hexavalent chromium (Cr-6) across three UP districts; a 2025 report found 73%-96% of villagers’ blood samples above safe chromium limits.
Key Facts
- Cr-6 is a man-made, highly toxic, human carcinogen (unlike naturally occurring Trivalent Chromium, Cr-3); sources include tanneries, electroplating and dye industries.
Major Groundwater Pollutants in India β Concepts for Prelims
| Pollutant | Origin / Effect |
|---|---|
| Arsenic | Geogenic β Black Foot Disease; worst in WB, Bihar, UP, Assam |
| Fluoride | Geogenic β Fluorosis; worst in Rajasthan, AP, Telangana |
| Nitrate | Man-made (fertilizers) β Blue Baby Syndrome |
| Hexavalent Chromium | Man-made (tanneries) β cancer-causing, turns water yellow |
