How OCS Cut-offs Work

  • Prelims: the Mains shortlist depends on GS Paper I marks, provided the candidate scores at least 33% in CSAT. The cut-off is fixed separately for each category and for women.
  • Mains: candidates must clear the Odia and English papers. Merit is then decided by the seven papers (1,750 marks), and about twice as many candidates as there are vacancies are called for the interview.
  • Final: the merit list ranks candidates on Mains plus interview (2,000 marks). Prelims marks are not added.
  • Where to find official figures: OPSC does not release cut-off marks with the Prelims result. Category-wise marks are usually published later, around the final result. Many websites carry cut-off tables that do not cite a source, so use only figures taken from OPSC notices.

Preparation Roadmap

1. Build the UPSC-common base
NCERTs and standard books for polity, history, geography and economy cover most of GS. The OCS pattern closely follows UPSC CSE.
2. Add the Odisha layer
Odisha history (Kalinga to the Praja Mandal movements), temple architecture, geography, the state budget and the Economic Survey, and state schemes.
3. Practise with PYQs
Solve OPSC Prelims PYQs subject-wise, then write answers to Mains PYQs.
4. Do not neglect the qualifying papers
The Odia and English papers are only Matriculation standard, but failing either one means the merit papers are not evaluated.
5. Choose the optional early
Sociology, geography, anthropology, history and public administration are common choices. Check the optional syllabus and past papers before you decide.
6. Track Odisha current affairs
Follow daily Odisha current affairs; they feed into Prelims, GS papers and the interview.
