Ujh Multipurpose Project
News Context
- The Union Cabinet approved the Ujh Multipurpose Project in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, with a revised cost of approximately ₹12,490 crore.
- The project follows India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) after the Pahalgam terror attack in 2025.

Key Facts for Prelims
- Ujh River is a tributary of the Ravi River, one of India’s Eastern Rivers under the IWT.
- Located in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir.
- Involves construction of a dam and reservoir on the Ujh River.
- Implementing agency: NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) in collaboration with the J&K government.
- DPR prepared by NHPC and cleared by the Central Water Commission (CWC).
Project Benefits
Power Generation
781 MW of hydroelectric power for J&K and the northern grid.
Irrigation
Will irrigate approximately 32,173 hectares in Kathua and Samba districts of J&K.
Water Storage
781 MCM storage will help utilise Ravi River waters that currently flow to Pakistan.
