Nuclear Energy Technology in India

News Context

  • India is advancing its nuclear programme to achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
  • In April 2026, the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam attained first criticality, marking the start of the second stage of India’s three-stage nuclear programme.

India’s Three-Stage Nuclear Programme — Key Facts for Prelims

  • Proposed by Dr. Homi J. Bhabha in 1954 for indigenous energy self-reliance.
  • Stage 1 (PHWRs): use natural uranium; spent fuel reprocessed to recover plutonium.
  • Stage 2 (Fast Breeder Reactors): use plutonium and produce U-233 from thorium; a breeder reactor produces more fissile material than it consumes.
  • Stage 3 (Thorium-based reactors): use U-233 to harness India’s abundant thorium reserves.

Fissile vs Fertile

Fissile (U-235, Pu-239, U-233) directly sustains a chain reaction; fertile (Th-232, U-238) converts into fissile fuel inside a reactor.

Uranium vs Thorium in India

India’s uranium reserves are low-grade/limited (imports needed); thorium reserves are abundant in coastal monazite sands (Kerala, TN, AP, Odisha, WB, Jharkhand).

Exam trap: PHWRs use natural uranium, not enriched uranium — this is precisely why India does not need uranium enrichment for its Stage-1 reactors.

Malaria Elimination in India by 2030

PIB press release banner on Union Health Ministry review of India's malaria elimination progress

News Context

  • Between 2015 and 2025, malaria cases and deaths declined by nearly 80%; high-burden districts fell from 155 to 33, with 160 districts reporting zero indigenous cases during 2022–25.

Key Facts for Prelims

  • Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted via the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.
  • National Framework for Malaria Elimination (2016–2030): targets interruption of indigenous transmission by 2027 and national elimination by 2030.
  • India exited the WHO High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) group in 2024; World Malaria Day is 25 April.
  • Two WHO-recommended vaccines: RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix) (2021) and R21/Matrix-M (2023), both against P. falciparum.

News Context

  • Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched ‘Gnani Artha’, a sovereign AI stack developed by GNANI AI, comprising Evon 3.3 (an LLM) and Plexus (a platform connecting AI with institutions).

Key Facts for Prelims

  • Sovereign AI means indigenous AI capabilities — models, infrastructure, and data — controlled within the country.
  • The Digital Sansad portal enables multi-language access to Parliamentary debates; AI-based simultaneous interpretation was introduced in 8 languages.
  • Linked to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.

  • Aims to bridge the gap between lab-stage innovation and market readiness for indigenous optical communication technologies, advancing Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Key Facts for Prelims

  • C-DOT — premier telecom R&D centre of the DoT, under the Ministry of Communications, established 1984.
  • Optical communication transmits data as light signals through optical fibres — the backbone of modern internet, broadband and 5G/6G networks.
