Context & Key Facts

  • Context: The West Bengal Cabinet approved the permanent transfer of 31.905 acres to the BSF for border fencing, following a Calcutta High Court order to hand over land by March 2026.
  • Border Length: India’s total border with Bangladesh is 4,096.70 km. West Bengal shares the longest stretch at 2,216.7 km (54%), followed by Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Assam.
  • Unfenced Areas: As of August 2025, 864.482 km remains unfenced. 174.514 km is non-feasible due to riverine channels, marshlands, and the ecologically sensitive Sundarbans.
  • Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) 2015: Resolved enclave disputes by exchanging 162 enclaves (111 Indian enclaves to Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves to India).
  • Governance: Managed under the 1975 Joint Guidelines and the 2011 Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) by the BSF and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh).

Lab-Grown Diamonds (LGDs)
💎

Production & Applications

HPHT Method

Mimics natural diamond formation using High Pressure and High Temperature inside the earth. It is highly energy-intensive.

CVD Method

Chemical Vapour Deposition uses carbon-rich gases to deposit atoms layer by layer on a seed. Can achieve a near-zero carbon footprint.

  • India’s Share: India is the world’s largest producer, exporting $1.5 billion in 2024-25 and accounting for 15% of global production (mostly from Surat, Gujarat).
  • Key Properties: LGDs are not synthetic—they possess identical physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined natural diamonds.
  • Government Boost: Budget 2023-24 reduced import duty on LGD seeds from 5% to 0%. IIT Madras received a grant to establish a specialized Research Centre.
  • Applications: Used in industrial cutting tools, medical instruments, semiconductors, and even quantum computing (using nitrogen-vacancy centres).

Contract Manufacturing Tax Breaks
🏭

Incentives & Policies

  • Context: Finance Bill 2026 proposed tax incentives to position India as a preferred contract manufacturing hub (benefiting suppliers like Foxconn and Tata Electronics).
  • Section 115BAB: Provides a concessional tax rate of 15% (effective rate ~17%) for new domestic manufacturing companies, vastly lower than the standard 22%.
  • Contract Manufacturing: Known as “international outsourcing.” Multinationals leverage lower production costs without investing directly in heavy capital facilities.
  • Data Centre Parity: Finance Bill 2026 also extended tax neutrality to data centre operators, allowing accelerated depreciation on equipment at 40% per annum.

Manufacturing PMI Trends
📊

Index Mechanics

  • Context: India’s HSBC Manufacturing PMI fell to 53.5 in July 2026, marking a five-year low since August 2021.
  • What is PMI? The Purchasing Managers’ Index is a survey-based measure indicating business activity expansion or contraction.
  • Scale: Ranges from 0 to 100. Above 50 = Expansion | Below 50 = Contraction | Exactly 50 = No change.
  • Five Key Variables: PMI is calculated using (1) New orders, (2) Output, (3) Employment, (4) Supplier delivery times, and (5) Stock of items purchased.
PMI acts as a leading economic indicator, providing early signals of economic momentum long before official government macroeconomic data is released.
5
Nauru (Republic of Naoero)
🏝️

Geography & Environment

  • Name Change: Nauru has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero (pronounced “Now-ero”) to match its native language.
  • Geography: A micronation and raised coral atoll in the southwestern Pacific (Micronesia), just south of the Equator.
  • Size: World’s third-smallest country by area (21 sq. km) and population (~12,000 residents).
  • Capital: It has no official capital. The district of Yaren acts as the de facto capital.
  • Environment & Economy: Heavy historical phosphate mining has degraded 80% of its land, leading to severe freshwater scarcity. Economy heavily relies on aid and offshore asylum processing for Australia.
6
Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
🦠

Transmission & Treatment

  • Context: The US CDC reported a surge of 1,645 cases of Cyclosporiasis. Past outbreaks were linked to leafy greens, lettuce, cilantro, and raspberries.
  • Pathogen: A foodborne illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
  • Transmission: Spreads strictly through the faeco-oral route (contaminated food/water). It does not spread from person to person.
  • Symptoms: Prolonged, watery diarrhoea, fatigue, and weight loss. If untreated, it can trigger malabsorption, cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation), and reactive arthritis.
  • Treatment: A 7 to 10 day course of the antibiotic TMP-SMX with aggressive hydration.
🚨
Prevention Warning: Chemical sanitising of produce may not fully eliminate the Cyclospora parasite. Thorough mechanical washing under clean running water and strict hand hygiene are strictly essential.
