Census Success & Habitat Key Facts

  • Census Update: India’s Asiatic lion population increased to 891 in the 2025 census (up from 674 in 2020, 523 in 2015, and 411 in 2010). Conducted every 5 years using Pugmark and camera trap methods.
  • Supreme Court Order: SC directed Gujarat to explore alternative sites beyond Gir to mitigate risks (like epidemics) inherent to a single-location population.
  • Exclusive Habitat: Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat is the world’s only remaining wild habitat for Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica).
  • Protection Status: Listed as Endangered (IUCN), Schedule I under Wildlife Protection Act 1972, and Appendix I in CITES.
  • Key Initiatives: Project Lion (2020) for holistic ecosystem revitalization. Kuno National Park was initially developed as a second home before housing cheetahs.

Distinct Physical Traits

Longer tail tuft, more prominent belly fold, and less developed mane in males compared to African lions.

Social Dynamics

Form smaller prides than African lions. Lions are the only big cats that live in social groups (prides).

Mission Clouded Leopard
🐆

State Animal Protection & Features

  • News Context: Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma launched Mission Clouded Leopard to conserve the mainland clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), the State animal of Meghalaya.
  • Two Species Globally:
    1. Neofelis nebulosa (Mainland Clouded Leopard) – Southeastern Asia & NE India.
    2. Neofelis diardi (Sunda Clouded Leopard) – Found in Sumatra and Borneo.
  • IUCN Status: Classified as Vulnerable.
  • Indian Distribution: Sikkim, northern West Bengal, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Key Characteristics: Arboreal (tree-dwelling) and nocturnal. Named after cloud-like coat ellipses. Features an exceptionally long tail equal to its body length for balance.

UPI and MDR Charges
💳

Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) Proposal

  • Proposed Change: Centre is considering reintroducing MDR (5 to 7 basis points) on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000, strictly for large merchants (annual turnover ₹1 Cr – ₹1.5 Cr).
  • Merchant Exemption: 90% of UPI merchants belong to small enterprise categories and will remain completely exempt.
  • What is MDR? Merchant Discount Rate is a fee paid by merchants to acquiring banks/PSPs to cover digital processing costs and infrastructure maintenance. Zero-MDR was introduced in Jan 2020.
  • NPCI Framework: UPI was launched in 2016 by NPCI (a “Not for Profit” firm under Sec 8, Companies Act 2013, created by RBI & IBA).
  • Special UPI Variants: UPI 123PAY (feature phones without internet), UPI Lite (offline small transactions up to ₹500), and UPI One World (foreign visitors without Indian bank accounts).

Polymer Currency Notes
💵

RBI Pilot & Material Science

  • News Context: RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced that polymer currency notes will enter trial circulation from the upcoming financial year.
  • Material Difference: Made from BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene), unlike current Indian notes made of 100% cotton-pulp paper.
  • Key Advantages: Water-resistant, tear-resistant, harder to counterfeit (transparent windows), and lasts 2.5 to 4 times longer than paper notes.
  • Economic & Eco Need: India spends ~₹5,000 crore annually replacing 20–24 billion damaged notes under the Clean Note Policy. A TERI study showed polymer notes have a lower overall lifecycle carbon footprint despite higher initial costs.
  • Global Precedent: Australia was the first to adopt full polymer notes in 1988; currently used in over 60 countries (UK, Canada, Singapore).

Neutrinos & Nuclear Fuel Monitoring
⚛️

JUNO Breakthrough & Physics Concepts

  • Breakthrough: Scientists at China’s JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory) showed that reactor antineutrinos allow real-time external monitoring of nuclear fuel composition and plutonium buildup for non-proliferation.
  • Particle Nature: Neutrinos are elementary leptons (uncharged, nearly massless) produced in nuclear reactions. They interact only via weak nuclear force and gravity.
  • Three Flavours: Electron neutrino, Muon neutrino, and Tau neutrino (along with corresponding antineutrinos).
  • Key Milestones: First hypothesized by Wolfgang Pauli (1930); detected by Cowan & Reines (1956); Neutrino oscillation (proving non-zero mass) won the 2015 Nobel Prize.
  • India’s INO Project: India-based Neutrino Observatory in Bodi West Hills (Tamil Nadu) aims to study neutrino oscillation using an Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) detector.

AI Digitisation & Copyright

Destructive Scanning & Fair Dealing

Destructive Scanning

Cutting off book spines to feed pages into rapid automated scanners. Highly efficient for AI training data, but permanently destroys physical copies.

Non-Destructive Scanning

Uses overhead cameras and V-cradles to scan open pages without altering bindings. Used by institutions like Internet Archive to preserve originals.

  • News Context: Copyright litigation against Anthropic revealed bulk purchases of books for “destructive scanning” to train Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Indian Copyright Law: Section 52 of the Copyright Act, 1957 governs “fair dealing” exceptions (private study, research, review, news reporting).
  • Unsettled Legal Status: Whether scanning physical books strictly to train AI models constitutes “fair dealing” remains legally unsettled in India and globally.
