Dry Ports in India

News Context: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal informed the Lok Sabha about new dry port proposals in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — Sri City (Tirupati district, AP) and Chityala (Nalgonda district, Telangana) are both under active consideration. The Inter-Ministerial Committee under Customs has already approved eight dry ports, including Fatehpur in Telangana, with priority given to areas of high industrial demand but limited infrastructure.

Sarnath: UNESCO World Heritage Site 2026

News Context: Sarnath was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea — becoming India’s 45th and Uttar Pradesh’s fourth World Heritage Site. Sarnath had been on UNESCO’s tentative list since July 3, 1998, taking 28 years to secure inscription.
Religious & Historical Significance
  • Sarnath is located northeast of Varanasi, near the confluence of the Ganges and Varuna rivers, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon here, known as “Dharmachakra Pravartan.”

Mega Data Centres in India

News Context: Citizens in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have opposed mega data centre projects in their states. Raiden Infotech India (a Google company) is developing a 1GW AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, while Amazon’s hyperscale data centre (₹7,203.29 crore, 53.73 acres) is proposed in Thane, Maharashtra.

Rice Cultivation and Methane Emissions

News Context: A study in Nature Food found GHG emissions from paddy fields have doubled since the 1960s. In 2011–2020, paddy fields produced around 1.1 billion tonnes of CO₂-e annually — a 90.4% increase over 1961–1980 emissions. About half the increase was driven by loss of soil organic carbon. Paddy fields in eastern India are among global methane hotspots, with irrigated paddy fields releasing 3.9 million tonnes of methane per year.
Why Paddy Fields Emit Methane
  • Flooded fields develop low-oxygen conditions where methane-producing microbes thrive.
  • Continuous irrigation, incorporating crop residues, and increasing nitrogen fertiliser use have all increased emissions.
  • Over a third of paddy fields worldwide began losing carbon by the 2010s.

India’s Rice Cultivation — Key Facts
