UPSC Mains GS Paper II International Relations

60 Days On, a Disturbing US-Iran Stalemate

The 60-day window for a US-Iran peace framework has expired without resolution — deepening West Asian instability with direct consequences for India’s energy security.
INDIA’S CRUDE IMPORT DEPENDENCE

STALEMATE WINDOW
60 days, expired unresolved
KEY CHOKEPOINTS AT RISK
Strait of Hormuz & Bab-el-Mandeb
⚔️

Nature of the Stalemate

  • Both sides have shifted from military strikes to economic warfare — the US rescinding sanction waivers on Iranian oil and maintaining a naval blockade, while Iran effectively blockades the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Neither side appears capable of ending the conflict; the deadlock is emerging as the “new balance of power.”
  • The unravelling of the MoU and the widening conflict (drawing in the Houthis, Saudi Arabia, and Bab-el-Mandeb) have deepened instability in West Asia.

Implications for India

1. Energy Security

Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb can raise oil prices and affect India’s crude and LNG supplies — India imports about 85% of its crude oil.

2. Economic Impact

Higher oil prices can increase the current account deficit, weaken the rupee and raise inflation.

3. Strategic Interests

Instability threatens projects like Chabahar Port and the INSTC, while also affecting the Indian diaspora and remittances in the Gulf.

4. Diplomatic Balancing

India must carefully balance relations with Iran, Israel, the US and Gulf countries while maintaining strategic autonomy.

🧭

Way Forward

Diversify Oil Imports
Russia, US, Latin America, Africa — to reduce Gulf dependence.
Expand Strategic Reserves
Build SPR buffers against supply shocks.
Accelerate Energy Transition
Renewables, green hydrogen, biofuels, nuclear (SHANTI Act).
Maritime Security Cooperation
Strengthen via IONS, Combined Maritime Forces, to secure sea lanes.

The stalemate underscores that diplomacy alone cannot insulate India from West Asian volatility. Genuine resilience lies in reducing import dependence, building energy buffers, and diversifying partnerships.
