Key Operational Facts & Significance
- News Context: Details regarding India’s planned indigenous space station were provided by MoS for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in the Rajya Sabha. Approved by the Union Cabinet in June 2023.
- Timeline & Orbit: The first module is targeted for launch by 2028, with the fully operational 52-tonne station completed by 2035. It will operate at an altitude of approximately 400 km.
- Capacity & Purpose: Will initially support 3 to 4 astronauts. Serves as a primary platform for microgravity research, deep space mission preparation, and Earth observation.
- Strategic Importance: The International Space Station (ISS) is slated for deorbit after 2030. BAS ensures India’s uninterrupted, long-term strategic presence in space.
BAS will make India only the fourth country globally to have its own space station architecture, following the USA, Russia, and China (whose Tiangong station became fully operational in 2022).
