NIT Rourkela Develops Lead-Free Materials for Security and Lighting

Why in News: Researchers at NIT Rourkela, with scientists from IIT Guwahati, IIT Bombay and NISER Bhubaneswar, have developed lead-free bismuth-based materials whose light emission changes in response to heat and moisture. The findings were published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry C, and the materials could be used in anti-counterfeiting, humidity sensing and lighting.

USES
Anti-counterfeiting, humidity sensing and lighting
📌

Summary

  • The material: Bismuth-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, offered as alternatives to lead-based photoluminescent materials, which raise environmental and health concerns because of lead toxicity.

How it works:

  • When heated, the compound releases water trapped in its structure and emits blue light under ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
  • When moisture returns, it reabsorbs water and the blue emission disappears. This structural change is reversible.
  • It can be made through a simple technique using relatively inexpensive, environmentally friendly constituents.

Applications:

  • Security inks for certificates, signatures and product labels, since the heat and UV response can verify authenticity.
  • Humidity sensors in food packaging and storage facilities.
  • Solid-state lighting: the team also developed lead-free materials emitting yellow light under UV, and combining them with a commercial blue emitter produced a white-light LED with a cool, daylight-like appearance and stable emission.
  • Team: Prof. Saroj L. Samal and research scholar Subhasish Sahoo (NIT Rourkela), Prof. Himansu S. Biswal and Laxmipriya Dash (NISER Bhubaneswar), and researchers from IIT Guwahati and IIT Bombay.
  • Status: The researchers plan to improve emission efficiency and long-term stability, and further testing is needed before commercial use.

Background Information

  • Photoluminescence: Emission of light by a material after it absorbs photons, as in UV-excited materials. It is the basis of fluorescent and phosphor-based lighting.
  • LED: A light-emitting diode, a solid-state light source that is more energy efficient than conventional bulbs. India promotes LED adoption under the UJALA scheme.
  • Lead toxicity: Lead is a neurotoxic heavy metal, which is why lead-free alternatives are sought in electronics and lighting.
  • NISER: The National Institute of Science Education and Research, at Jatni near Bhubaneswar, is a research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy.
  • NIT Rourkela: An Institute of National Importance in Sundargarh district (NIT Act, 2007).
  • Anti-counterfeiting: Counterfeit goods are a concern for IPR and consumer protection, and security features like UV-responsive inks are used in currency and documents.
