Background of the Battle of Haifa
- Date & Context: Fought on 23 September 1918 during the First World War, as part of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign between the Allied Powers and the Ottoman Empire.
- Indian Cavalry: The 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade, comprising the Jodhpur, Mysore and Hyderabad Lancers, played a key role in capturing Haifa.
- Battle & Significance: Indian cavalry used swords and lances to attack enemy positions defended by machine guns, rifles and artillery, making it one of the notable cavalry charges of World War I.
- Major Dalpat Singh: The Jodhpur Lancers’ Major Dalpat Singh, known as the “Hero of Haifa,” was killed during the battle and was posthumously awarded the Military Cross.
- Gallantry Awards: Several Indian soldiers received awards including the Military Cross and Indian Order of Merit for their bravery.

- Haifa Day: The Indian Army observes 23 September as Haifa Day to remember the Indian soldiers who fought in the battle.
- Memorial: Delhi’s Teen Murti Memorial, representing the Jodhpur, Mysore and Hyderabad Lancers, commemorates their contribution to the Battle of Haifa.
- Historical Significance: The battle highlights the contribution of Indian soldiers in World War I and has also become an important symbol of India–Israel historical ties.
The Battle of Haifa is a reminder that Indian soldiers fought under colonial command in a war not their own — their valour is remembered today as a shared chapter in India–Israel historical relations, distinct from the freedom struggle at home.
