TIBETAN BROWN BEAR 

News Context: India has recorded its first-ever confirmed sighting of a rare Tibetan brown bear (Ursus arctos pruinosus) in Sikkim. 

About Tibetan Brown Bear:

    • It is also known as the Tibetan blue bear. 
    • It is an omnivore (eat and survive on both plant and animal matter) 
    • Feature: Has a distinctive ‘V’ shaped white chest mark 
    • Habitat: Inhabits alpine forests, meadows, and steppe, at elevations from 2,000 to 4,500 metres.
    • Mainly found in Nepal, Bhutan and the Tibetan plateau. 
  • Conservation Status:
    • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (Schedule 1) 
    • CITES (Appendix 1)
